COMMUNITY ENGLISH AS ANOTHER LANGUAGE (EAL)

English as Another Language (EAL) classes are open to residents of Edmonton who are permanent residents, Canadian citizens or temporary foreign workers. Visitors to Canada can also sign up for a fee. EAL Classes are offered in different locations in Edmonton in cooperation with other organizations.

WHAT WE OFFER

Learners benefit from:

  • Improved vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and conversational skills
  • The chance to practice English in a caring, non-judgmental environment
  • Information to help get settled in Canada (e.g. housing, banking, citizenship, and how to get a job)
  • A new social network

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK

Classes run in the fall, winter and spring at locations around Edmonton. Learners can join mid-session if space allows.

WHO CAN ACCESS THESE SERVICES?

Learners must fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

  • Immigrant Albertans who have a beginner or low intermediate level of English
  • 18 years of age or older

HOW TO ACCESS SERVICES

For classes at EMCN’s West End location, the Welcome Centre for Immigrants or at SAGE, register when you come to classes. There is no fee to attend these classes. For classes at First Presbyterian Church, register and pay your fees at EMCN Northeast 11713 – 82 Street NW between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm on weekdays.

Fees for classes at First Presbyterian Church are:

  • First time student fee: $15
  • Morning classes: Permanent resident or citizen $65 per session, Visitors $210 per session
  • Afternoon classes: Permanent resident or citizen $45 per session, Visitors $140 per session
