Former Child Soldier | Inspirational Speaker on the Ability to Create Change

Michel-ChikwanineA former child soldier, Michel Chikwanine has already endured and overcome unimaginable pain and struggles. His passion and belief in the possibility for change makes him a truly remarkable individual and humanitarian.

Michel is an accomplished motivational speaker, addressing audiences across North America. He has spoken to over 100,000 people and was also on Oprah’s Ambassadors Roots of Action speaking tour, which largely reached students at resource-poor schools. Sharing his personal story, Michel has captured the attention of national media, including CBC, CTV and major daily newspapers as he inspires people to believe in their ability to create change.

Produced by the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers, The RISE Awards is in its 12th year. Over the years this event has become a signature event for the Centre with hundreds of attendees each year. The RISE Awards provide the Centre with an opportunity to bring awareness to the importance of integration, settlement and the challenges newcomers face each day.

The RISE Awards’ main purpose is to celebrate the many contributions born Canadians, newcomers and corporations make each day to enhance the quality of life for newcomers. The RISE Awards are broken down into six categories Arts and Culture, Community Leadership Immigrant, Community Leadership Non-Immigrant, Lifetime Achievement, Welcoming Workplace – Small Business and Welcoming Workplace – Large Business. Award Categories

  1. Arts and Culture Award-This award will recognize achievement in an artistic endeavor by an immigrant including visual, literary, or performing arts.

  1. Community Leadership Award—Immigrant – This award will recognize commendable service to the community by an immigrant including but not limited to the areas of ethno-cultural community leadership, education, health promotion, and emotional, social, community, or spiritual advancements.

  1. Community Leadership Award—Non-Immigrant – This award will recognize commendable service to the immigrant community by a born-Canadian including but not limited to the areas of intercultural community leadership, education, health promotion, emotional, community, or social advancements.

  1. Lifetime Achievement Award – This award will recognize an immigrant who, over a longer period of time, has made substantial contributions to the greater Edmonton community in more than one of these areas: arts and culture; business; community service; health; social services; and education.

  1. Welcoming Workplace Award—Small Business – This award will recognize a small business who is committed to the successful integration and retention of newcomers in their workplace. The employer will have established cultural diversity practices and initiatives that facilitate the success of immigrants in their workplace. These practices will recognize the skill and experience of newcomers as well as the capacity newcomers have to succeed in the workplace.

  1. Welcoming Workplace Award—Large Business – This award will recognize a large business who is committed to the successful integration and retention of newcomers in their workplace. The employer will have established cultural diversity practices and initiatives that facilitate the success of immigrants in the workplace.
