Conversation Circle Leader

Conversation Circle is a project where we engage newcomer seniors virtually to help them to make connection through an EAL environment. For the Conversation circle, volunteers would work with Volunteer Services staff to facilitate casual English conversation practice for the participants. The vision of this circle is to create a place for newcomer seniors to improve their English conversation and listening skills, we aim at helping seniors to build speaking confidence and make connections in the community. Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead conversation circles in small groups through breakout rooms on Zoom
  • Prepare and adjust lessons by using weekly lesson plans provided by Volunteer Services Team
  • Support newcomers’ seniors in speaking and pronunciation practice
  • Provide one on one English support if needed
  • Engage with seniors through conversations and share stories
  • Encourage the students to learn
  • Willing to learn how to teach ESL/EAL

To Volunteer in this Role You Should:

  • Speak, read and write English fluently
  • Able to converse with people from various background and levels of English
  • Be flexible, patient and a good communicator
  • Respect people of all cultures
  • Be organized, encouraging and adaptable
  • Be able to guide people through learning activities
  • Reliably commit to a volunteer schedule
  • Teaching, adult education or ESL/EAL experience is welcome

Minimum Commitment

2+ hours per week for a minimum commitment of 4 months
